ONE TO WATCH: MR TOM ODELL!

On the final day of last month's Glastonbury Festival, Mr Tom Odell performed in the giant tent otherwise known as the John Peel Stage. Thousands gathered in sweltering conditions to hear the winner of the 2013 Brits Critics' Choice award perform songs from his debut album, Long Way Down. In an atmosphere that resembled a born-again convention, Mr Odell gave his life and soul to the show, and duly took the roof off. Nobody there queried his artistic bona fides, or processed his music through a filter of cynicism. And yet, six days before his triumphant set at Worthy Farm, the 22-year-old Chichester-born singer had been caught up in a media firestorm when his father, enraged by a scathing, 0/10 review of Long Way Down in NME, had telephoned the music magazine to make his feelings plain. News of both the review and the phone call quickly went viral, with Ms Lily Allen - who signed Mr Odell to her record label - taking to Twitter to defend him. Over the course of the next few days, the release of the album looked set to be framed solely within NME's terms of reference. Mr Odell had other ideas, however, and two trump cards up his sleeve. One of these was his ability to create musical alchemy in a live setting, a trick he displayed on that Sunday afternoon in Somerset; the other was played later that same day, when Long Way Down entered the UK album chart at No.1. Which is, by anybody's standards, a pretty emphatic riposte.

'"I don't think there are many times in most people's careers where you go from basically being unknown to being put in a position where you're suddenly doing 15 interviews in one day. That was a bit of a jump, to put it mildly. My biggest issue was that there I was spending all my time talking about music and none actually making it, and I never want to be in that situation again. It's so not the reason I do this."

SHE'S BACK: KATE MOSS COVERS ESQUIRE'S SEPTEMBER ISSUE!

Kate Moss hasn’t been photographed for the cover of a men’s magazine in 17 years – now she’s back, as the star of Esquire’s September issue. The exclusive shoot by photographer Craig McDean and stylist Kate England is the first time since Arena in 1996 that Moss has posed for a men’s title. Before that it was Esquire again, 20 years ago, in 1993.

Two decades on, Moss’s powers remain undiminished. Still one of the sexiest, stylish and alluring women on the planet she is also, as Esquire editor Alex Bilmes puts it, “a uniquely British figure” – perfect for our ‘Made In Britain’ issue.

"For too long [Kate Moss] has been monopolised by women’s fashion magazines," says Bilmes. "So I am thrilled that we’ve persuaded her to front our special issue dedicated to this country’s most stylish people and products. I really can’t imagine anyone better suited to the job."

THE INTERVIEW: MR MILES KANE!

On the cover of his lean, mean second solo album Don't Forget Who You Are, Mr Miles Kane stands in front of his mother's butcher's stall in St Johns market, Liverpool. In a typically skintight suit, the mod songbird looks defiant. "It was a little reminder to myself, and to anyone, don't get caught up in any bullshit," he says of the album's rousing title track. "I see it happen to people I love. They get a bit of attention and they lose their minds."

Since releasing his 2011 solo debut Colour of the Trap, Mr Kane has befriended "the modfather" Mr Paul Weller and dated model Ms Suki Waterhouse. Currently enjoying a purple patch of press attention, he is on the verge of his biggest UK tour to date. Yet any fear of Mr Kane being changed by fame is soon quashed. The previous night's gig at a hometown dive bar was as enthusiastic as any Glastonbury headline show. "It was absolutely mental," he recalls.

'There was no barrier; We played the last song and everyone got on stage. Two birds were kissing me - I felt like Tom Jones'

Mr Kane's second album, Don't Forget Who You Are, is out now!

FINE YOUNG CANNIBALS!

Fine Young Cannibals were a British band formed in Birmingham, England in 1984, by bassist David Steele, guitarist Andy Cox (both formerly of The Beat), and singer Roland Gift (formerly of the Akrylykz). Their 1989 album, The Raw and the Cooked, topped the UK and US Album charts, and contained their two Billboard Hot 100 number ones: "She Drives Me Crazy" and "Good Thing".

In 1990 the band won two Brit Awards: Best British Group, and Best British Album (for The Raw and the Cooked). Their name came from the 1960 film All the Fine Young Cannibals starring Robert Wagner and Natalie Wood.
