The soft cotton fabric was popular with all the designers, and has progressed from being the preserve of evening wear, in the form of smoking jackets, to being a vital part of a smart daytime wardrobe. Chief among its virtues is the fact that women admire its tactility, and as a result are given to stroking it; however, the fact that it's smart but has nothing to do with office wear is almost as appealing. The ability to master chic off-duty outfits is the hallmark of the well-dressed man, and velvet has a big role to play in that endeavour.
