REAL ESTATE: LOS ANGELES!

In 20th-century Los Angeles, modern architecture and film-making had far more in common than just prime location. A stream of creative talent that never stopped flowing between Southern California and Europe fed both pursuits. In the movies, German expressionism, film noir, the French New Wave and the American new wave formed a transatlantic chain of influence. The same was true of ground-breaking architecture, as European immigrants, including Mr Rudolph Schindler and Mr Richard Neutra, separated themselves from the inspiring orbit of Mr Frank Lloyd Wright - the Wisconsin-born godfather of the modern architecture movement in the US - and anticipated the genius of Mr John Lautner, whose residential work remains a gift to location scouts in search of the spectacular

Mr Wright's avant-garde concrete, Mr Neutra's stunning clean lines, and Mr Lautner's extraordinary connections to the natural environment - these signatures are as unmistakable on the physical landscape as they are in the celluloid avenues of our collective imagination.

Los Angeles offered real estate like nowhere else in the world: an experimental architect's wonderland, in a climate that erased the boundary between indoor and outdoor. For Hollywood, that meant an endless real world, life-sized suburban backlot peppered with structures few set designers could dream of matching. As Mr Jeff Bridges' The Dude remarks to modern-homeowner Jackie Treehorn (Mr Ben Gazzara) in The Big Lebowski, as they stroll through Mr Lautner's Sheats-Goldstein Residence: "Quite a pad you got here, man."

SUN, SEA & STYLE!

If you're wondering why Messrs Zac and Jordan Stenmark look so at home in these images, it's probably because they are. The 21-year-old twins, who are currently taking the modelling world by storm, were born and raised in Sydney, Australia, only a short drive from the picturesque shores and headlands of the Northern Beaches. The stretch of coastline is their stomping ground, the scene of many an idyllic summer spent at the family's holiday home in Palm Beach, and this is far from their first time at sea. "Our teachers had us in a boat learning to sail in primary school," says Jordan, "and Zac's girlfriend's dad had a boat, too - it's always been a way of life. We've grown up around the ocean''

Sailing might come as second nature to the twins, but sport - Australian Rules football, in particular - is their first passion, and that was the direction they were pursuing, playing semi-professionally with Greater Western Sydney, when their modelling careers started to take off. Coaches, family and friends urged them to give it a go. "We were happy to put the sport on hold for a while," explain the twins. "And our family has been really supportive; they appreciate that not everyone gets this opportunity to grow and travel the world." Their family would certainly know - the twins' parents both had modelling careers. Clearly, in the Stenmark household, the apple doesn't fall far from the tree.

The brothers are currently based in New York, and although it's a long way from Sydney, they try to organise a return trip every three or four months. "We're very family-oriented," they explain, citing family activities - of the sporting variety, of course - as central to a relaxed weekend at home.

FALL ESSENTIALS: TWEED JACKET!

Given the relaxed nature of modern dress codes, men's clothes must be versatile, and few items are as versatile as the tweed jacket, one of MR PORTER's fall Essentials and one of 20 items we (fashionspam, also) think every man should own. Need to dress up for a client meeting? Put on a tweed jacket, a shirt and tie, a pair of grey wool trousers and some brown suede shoes. Going on a date? Put on a tweed jacket, a white T-shirt, a pair of slim jeans and some desert boots. Going for a walk in the country? Put on a tweed jacket, a flannel shirt, corduroy trousers and a pair of Wellington boots. You get the idea; like a Land Rover, a robust tweed jacket can go almost anywhere, and like a Land Rover, a tweed jacket is a British design classic. As for how to wear them, this season we favour the American Ivy style over the British country look. This involves slim chinos, Oxford cloth or chambray button-down shirts, and brown loafers or desert boots. Click through the slides above to see seven men who have helped secure the tweed jacket's status as a true menswear staple.

MR CHARLES EAMES, THE ARTIST!

When, during World War II, Mr Charles Eames moved to Los Angeles with his new wife Ms Ray Eames (neé Ms Ray Kaiser), the design duo embarked on a career that would define the look of an entire era

Their creative and romantic partnership was of unrivalled influence in the post-war period, thanks to the way they combined an engineer's take on modernism, a joyful sense of optimism and a deeply artistic sensibility. They may now be remembered chiefly as the designers of beautiful furniture, but the film suggests that their talents were far broader than their current legacy suggests.

Eames: The Architect and the Painter is released on 3 August!

THE LOOK: MR VINCENT KARTHEISER!

"It's like Oscar Wilde said: 'there are two great tragedies in life'," he says. "'One is not getting what you want, and the other is getting it.'"

"Don't get me wrong, I get along terribly well with the cast," he says. "I don't think they hate me as much as they hate Pete Campbell, but maybe I worry that they do. So I share that with Pete."

"Thirty years old are just teenagers that gold older. You do adult things like shave your face and pay taxes, but you have a lot of the same insecurities and socially awkward abilities"

MAGIC CITY, MIAMI'S GLAMOUR OF THE 1950s!

Taking inspiration from old Vogue and Vanity Fair magazines, original Dior couture pieces from mid-50s and other Men's Apparel magazines, costume designer Carol Ramsey and the producers of Magic City, have the potential to be the next 'Pan Am', 'Mad Men' or 'Boardwalk Empire'. (Just think of it as Mad Men meets the Mob in Miami or a Miami Boardwalk Empire after the Prohibition Era)

" It’s important in shows like this to stay in the period. And once you’re grounded, you can take liberties." Carol Ramsey

Briefly Magic City is the tale of hotel owner Ike Evans who builds one of the largest mid century modern structures in the city...
the rest is up to you watching it!

THE 'F' MYSTERY

I check 'the three f' blog once in a while..The guy has a pretty nice style,
although a little bit too formal for my taste (don't get me wrong, I love formal,
but not when you go out shopping for bread). Anyway, besides anything else,
something is wrong with the guy and his outfits. Even though he has loaaads
of shirts, trousers, tees, t-shirts and shoes, he seems like he is dressed exactly the
same everyday, in every picture (and really, he changes his outfit in every single post)
I'll let you deal with the mystery, and  get inspired from some of his outfits!
Have a nice day folks! Oh, he always wear very nice shoes btw!
