ORNELLA VANONI - L'APPUNTAMENTO!

What better way to wrap up another impeccable week of Pitti Uomo Firenze..

Ornella Vanoni is one of the most credited pop singers of Italy. She is known for her sophisticated pop style. In addition to her singing career, Ornella Vanoni was active in other arts, starring in stage and TV shows, movies, and posing nude for the Italian edition of Playboy magazine. The inclusion of her former hit "L'Appuntamento" (1970) on the Ocean's Twelve soundtrack sparked a worldwide renewal of interest in Ornella Vanoni.

Don't worry! Many more pictures from Pitti Uomo to come in the next few days on fashionspam!

FIVE WAYS TO WEAR: SHORTS!

Every man should own at least one good pair of shorts. Comfortable and relaxed, they're the perfect fair-weather fall-back, and, as MR PORTER's Style Director Mr Dan May demonstrates in their new video, there are a number of ways to wear them. To illustrate this point, they have chosen J.Crew's Stanton chino shorts. Constructed from rugged cotton twill, they are available on MR PORTER in a wide range of colours, but to emphasise their versatility we've chosen just one: a sun-bleached shade of lobster pink that brings to mind an East Coast sensibility, and imparts a summery, preppy flavour to each of our five looks. Shorts are inherently informal, and will likely never be appropriate for dinner at The Ritz, but it's possible nevertheless to dress them up or down to suit a variety of laid-back summer scenarios

Again, the same story: some faces you may recognize, some you may not. However, the style is just a little bit different (and again: not in a bad way of course. the style is impeccable and you people should learn from it!)

BOYS TOYS: SPYKER C8 AILERON!

In MR PORTER's new video series, Road Test, they showcase some of the world's most eye-catching cars. To put them through their paces, MR PORTER has enlisted the help of racing driver and TV producer Mr David Green. In their first film, the British Motor Sports Association GT Endurance Champion takes the Dutch-manufactured Spyker C8 Aileron for a spin. "Although relatively unknown, Spyker has been around for more than 100 years. Having moved into aircraft production during WWI, its aviation heritage can be seen in the design," he says. "An old company given new life, the C8 Aileron has a handcrafted feel, especially the interior, but it is a pure, modern supercar." The car's proportions incorporate the likes of a jet engine-inspired air intake and a general nod to classic car design. Despite not being designed to challenge the record-breaking speeds of Lamborghini et al., the Aileron celebrates the raw thrill of driving and is aimed at a more discerning owner. "It was great to shoot the car in an urban environment - it's not all about gears and noise... As much as the racing, I love the design and the beauty," Mr Green says.

The C8 Aileron may present an obscure option to supercar enthusiasts, but, asked about what type of man would drive one, Mr Green suggests someone "who has a good knowledge of cars, yet doesn't want to conform. It's an individualistic choice that's still subtle." With Spyker's motto being Nulla tenaci invia est via (in Latin meaning "For the tenacious, no road is impassable"), it's almost challenging us to take one out for a drive. Watch the video, below, to see the Aileron in action, and check out its vital statistics. And if you like what Mr Green is wearing, click here for details. MR PORTER guarantees his outfit costs a whole lot less than the car!

FASHION WEEK SPECIAL: THE WAY I PACK!

Working in the fashion industry involves travelling for up to a month at a time twice a year to attend the runway shows and designer appointments in Paris, Milan, New York and London. This presents a unique packing challenge, considering the length of time away from home and the office, and the fact that what those who attend fashion shows wear is scrutinised almost as closely as the clothes on the runway. With street-style bloggers on every corner, their cameras poised, and unforgiving industry peers with a judgmental glimmer in their eyes wherever you turn, the pressure is on - and there's no chance of getting away with shoving a few things into your Rimowa case 10 minutes before the taxi to the airport arrives.

Packing for a conference in another city or a fortnight in the sun will seem like a doddle in comparison, which is why MR PORTER asked their Editor-in-Chief Mr Jeremy Langmead, Buying Director Mr Toby Bateman and Features Editor Mr Mansel Fletcher to talk us through how they pack for "fashion month". Learn how it's done the hard way, and everything else will fall into place. Watch the video, above, for some packing inspiration.

STYLE SETTERS: MR HUMPHREY BOGART!

A look at the Hollywood icon renowned for being economical with words, but never with style.
Laconic, effortless and the man who stole the heart of Ms Lauren Bacall, Mr Humphrey Bogart was the most insouciant actor of his time. In strong contrast to present-day Hollywood stars, he never ran towards the cameras with a fireball a feet or two behind him and he never used two words if one would do. In fact, most of Mr Bogart's great movie moments - and there were many - gained their strength from the fact that he said virtually nothing at all, capable as he was of saying everything necessary by the way he lit a cigarette or gazed ahead - nothing more overtly dramatic than that

"The expression 'laid-back' could have been invented for the one they called Bogie and the truth is they just don't make them like that any more."

But he wasn't entirely as he seemed. Although he became the archetype of the American tough guy and a symbol of US egalitarianism between the wars, Mr Bogart was not a man of the people. His family was comfortably off when he was young and he went to good schools - although he was expelled in 1918 in a scenario evocative of The Catcher in the Rye. Even though Mr Bogart's background wasn't entirely one of silver-spoon assurance, it was comfortable enough to give him the laid-back air that was to be the backbone of his performances on screen as well as in life. And that was the reason why Bogie had such a huge effect on men everywhere. Quite simply, they wanted to be like him because they loved his confidence and cool authority, and the effect they had on women, on and off the screen. In fact, Mr Bogart was the creator of a school of acting, influencing stars such as Messrs Jean-Paul Belmondo and Yves Montand, who admired the sexual charisma that came naturally to Mr Bogart but had to be learnt by others.

SUMMER READING: HOUSES OF THE SUNDOWN SEA!

Houses of the Sundown Sea: The Architectural Vision of Harry Gesner. For more than sixty years, casual observers and architectural aficionados alike have craned their necks to catch glimpses of Harry Gesner houses of Southern CaliforniaThere's one hovering on a mountaintop above Malibu, as it poised to take flight over the Pacific. Another is bolded to a cliff so that the site can support a home before the next 60 -foot cliff drops off. And yet another is tucked away on the grounds of the Getty Museum centre in Los Angeles. Maverick architect and inventor Harry Gesner was always drawn to unusual, challenging sites, which called for dramatic architecture and living environments. Houses of the Sundown Sea: The Architectural Vision of Harry Gesner will open doors to these and twelve other intriguing homes, all located in and round the Los Angeles area, accompanied by magnificent photographs by Jurgen NogaiThe book's scope will be broad, using archival photographs, documents and a rich collection of Gesner's own spectacular design drawings, blue prints and floor plans to trace his career from 1945 to the present. Even in Southern California, a region that has been a catalyst for great Modern architecture for more than a century, Gesner's utterly unique designs are outside the canons of doctrinaire modernism. Rather, his sensibility springs from his interpretation of the landscape and the messages it communicates to him after days of sketching on a new pristine site. Inevitably, for a man born an raised in Southern California, his sculptural designs are imbues with the vision of an almost primeval California, derived from his parents memories of the relatively undeveloped paradise of his youth. He is a Modernist, but one whose romantic, idealistic nature has caused his truly extraordinary body of work to be overlooked. Until now.

BEACH HOUSE - MYTH!

This band was the first thing that came to my mind after the previous post.
Have a nice evening!

Beach House is a dream pop duo from Baltimore, Maryland, formed in 2004. The band consists of French-born Victoria Legrand and Baltimore native Alex Scally. Their self-titled debut album was released in 2006 to critical acclaim and has been followed by Devotion in 2008, Teen Dream in 2010, and Bloom in 2012.

THE ICON: MR HARRY GESNER!

The life story of Mr Harry Gesner, whose 88 years have packed in three times the action of most ordinary high achievers, is so fabled that if it were not true, you'd suspect it had been fabricated by the author of a classic Boy's Own yarn. Mr Gesner is primarily an architect, whose work over six decades has defined many of Southern California's most sought-after bluffs, coves and hillsides... But that only scratches the surface.

MR PORTER has been invited to meet Mr Gesner at his home, Sandcastle, a remarkable circular construction of stucco, salvaged brick and repurposed wood set flush to the beach at the western end of Malibu, California. The building next door is also a Gesner structure: The Wave House (completed in 1956), much admired by Mr Jørn Utzon (who channelled some of that admiration into his design for the Sydney Opera House) and formerly owned by rock'n'roll legend Mr Rod Stewart.

"I thought that the best education I could possibly get would be to see the world. ''

MR PORTER was joined by model and actor Mr Zen Gesner, 42, the youngest of Harry's offspring, whose credits include a fistful of Farrelly brothers comedies and the TV series The Adventures of Sinbad, in which he played the title character. On looks alone, both father and son qualify as archetypal Southern Californian supermen: they are lords of the longboard, buffed to a state of golden wellbeing by the ocean and the sun.

If Game of Thrones happened to be set in modern Malibu, the House of Gesner would be a dominant dynasty, fortified by its youngest generation, which includes Mr Zen Gesner's three sons, Finn (15), Rory (12) and Tuck (9). It has become a family tradition that fathers instil in their offspring a love of creativity, a close bond with the natural world and an appreciation for ancient weaponry. "My dad is the ultimate renaissance man," says Mr Zen Gesner. "He trained me how to use a sword, and a bow and arrow, and he taught me how to dance. I'm an actor, and I love that walk of life, but I have a great appreciation for what my father does as well. Dad was always a constant source of inspiration."

THE KNACK: HOW TO BUY A ROLEX!

So you want to buy a Rolex (yes I do as a matter of fact). The reasons are irrelevant - perhaps you were in Milan and liked the way the suave locals were wearing them, or maybe you just got a nice bonus. Regardless, once you have made the decision, you are likely to start some online research. The next thing you know, you're seriously overwhelmed, reading about vintage Bart Simpson dials and Single vs Double Reds, and lying awake at night wondering how to tell an original Paul Newman dial from a repainted one. Relax! Just stick to the tips MR PORTER has outlined above and not only will your watch-loving friends be impressed by your superior take, but there will be a smile on your face every time you glance at your wrist and see the face of an expertly considered Rolex looking right back at you.

Check out some common mistakes when buying a Rolex after the break!

JOHN GALLIANO'S 'FIRST-EVER INTERVIEW SOBER'!

In his first interview since his 2011 firing from Dior, 52-year-old John Galliano sat down for a series of wide-ranging conversations with contributing editor Ingrid Sischy. Beyond his anti-Semitic rant, which shattered the designer’s career, Galliano and Sischy talked of the designer’s young life, including beatings and childhood taunting; his fashion education and the development of his eye; and how being “a slave” to his success led him down a path of addiction. Looking forward, Sischy writes of Galliano's future: “He has begun taking baby steps to re-enter the world of fashion. My prediction: Get ready for his second act.”

Fashion designer John Galliano, in his first-ever sober interview, tells Vanity Fair contributing editor Ingrid Sischy that, in spite of his words, he is not an anti-Semite or a racist. “It’s the worst thing I have said in my life, but I didn’t mean it. . . . I have been trying to find out why that anger was directed at this race. I now realize I was so fucking angry and so discontent with myself that I just said the most spiteful thing I could.”

Reflecting on his last two years of sobriety and struggles to come to terms with his words and actions, Galliano says that he knows “it sounds a bit bizarre, but I am so grateful for what did happen. I have learned so much about myself. I have re-discovered that little boy who had the hunger to create, which I think I had lost. I am alive.”

A few weeks into Galliano’s recovery, Kate Moss contacted him and asked him to design her wedding dress, something they had discussed when he was still at Dior. Galliano tells Sischy he felt it was a gift: “Creating Kate’s wedding dress saved me personally because it was my creative rehab. She dared me to be me again.” Moss describes the gown as “absolutely gorgeous, a diaphanous 1920s-type dress, romantic, with gold sequins in the shape of the phoenix—as if he was saying he would rise from this.” She tells Sischy that “when my dad gave his speech he thanked everyone and then he referred to the genius of Galliano, who made his daughter’s dress. Everyone stood up and gave John a standing ovation. It was the most moving thing, because suddenly John realized he wasn’t on his own.
