TURN OFF ALL ELECTRONICS!

"Sir, you must turn off all electronics."
"OK."
"Sir, please turn off the camera."
"Ma’am, it doesn’t turn off, and it doesn’t turn on."
"I’m sorry sir, but all electronics must be turned off until the Captain turns on the overhead lights."
"Ma’am, it was built in 1938. It isn’t electronic. There is no On or Off, it’s completely mechanical."
"Sir, I’m afraid you’re just going to have to put it away."

LA MALETA MEXICANA (2011)!

La Maleta Mexiacana (Mexican Suitcase) tells the story of the recovery of 4,500 negatives by Robert Capa, Gerda Taro and David 'Chim' Seymour taken during the Spanish Civil War found 70 years later in a closet in Mexico City. The film looks at the journey of these negatives from France to Mexico; their survival and looks at how Spain reflects today on its own history as well as those who escaped. Mexico was the only country to come to the rescue and support of the Spanish Republic and then honor and support the Republic in exile when the rest of the world turned its back. Mexican Suitcase looks at this unique story and these photos lost for seventy years.

EVEN DE NIRO FUCKED UP!

The 70-year-old star tried out for four different parts in the first of Francis Ford Coppola’s epic gangster trilogy – and was turned down for all of them. The video shows De Niro as an unknown actor in his 20s auditioning for the part of Sonny Corleone wearing a jaunty hat.

The part eventually went to James Caan while De Niro was briefly cast as Vito Corleone’s driver Paulie but ended up losing out to Johnny Martino for that role, too. But De Niro had the last laugh when he was cast as the young Vito in The Godfather Part II – a part which bagged him his first Oscar in 1974.

ON THE AIR: NIRVANA 'NEVERMIND'! (DON'T FORGET TO VOTE!)

Although Bleach is my favourite Nirvana album, tonight, at My-Very-Personal-Mood Radio Station I feel like some ''Come as you are'', ''In bloom'' and ''Polly''..

Nevermind is Nirvana's second studio album, released on September 24, 1991. Produced by Butch Vig, Nevermind was the group's first release on DGC Records. Frontman Kurt Cobain sought to make music outside the restrictive confines of the Seattle grunge scene, drawing influence from groups such as the Pixies and their use of song volume dynamics.

Nirvana was a band from Aberdeen, Washington, formed by Kurt Cobain and Krist Novoselic, that had signed to Seattle independent record label Sub Pop. The group released its debut album Bleach in 1989, with Chad Channing on drums. However, Channing left Nirvana in 1990, and the band was in need of a permanent drummer. During a show by hardcore punk band Scream, the group's drummer, Dave Grohl (founder of Foo Fighters), impressed Novoselic and Cobain. When Scream unexpectedly disbanded, Grohl contacted Novoselic, made his way to Seattle, and was soon invited to join the band. Novoselic said in retrospect that when Grohl joined the band, everything "fell into place". Despite releasing only three full-length studio albums in their seven-year career, Nirvana has come to be regarded as one of the most influential and important rock bands of the modern era.

Rolling Stone described Nirvana's influence as having "kicked in" the 1990s as a musical era, adding that their music "guaranteed the nineties would not suck," and claimed that the band "transformed rock for a generation." According to the magazine, "few bands in rock history have had a more immediate and tangible impact on their contemporary pop musical landscape than Nirvana did in the early Nineties."

Nevermind was released on September 24, 1991. American record stores received an initial shipment of 46,251 copies, while 35,000 copies were shipped in the United Kingdom, where Bleach had been successful. The album debuted on the Billboard 200 at number 144. As the band set out for their European tour at the start of November 1991, Nevermind entered the Billboard Top 40 for the first time at number 35. Nevermind became Nirvana's first number one album on January 11, 1992, replacing Michael Jackson's Dangerous at the top of the Billboard charts. By this time, Nevermind was selling approximately 300,000 copies a week. "Come as You Are" was finally released as the second single in March 1992, also becoming a hit; it peaked at number nine on the UK Singles Chart and at number 32 on the Billboard Hot 100 singles chart. Two more singles, "Lithium" and "In Bloom", were released from the album, which peaked at number 11 and 28 on the UK Singles Chart respectively. Nevermind was certified Gold and Platinum by the Recording Industry Association of America in November 1991, and was certified Diamond in March 1999.

The album has sold over 30 million copies worldwide. Nevermind was responsible for bringing alternative rock to a large mainstream audience, and has been ranked highly on lists of the greatest albums of all time by publications such as Rolling Stone and TimeIn September 2011, in honor of the album's 20th anniversary, Universal Music Enterprises released a 2-CD Deluxe Edition and a 4-CD/1-DVD Super Deluxe Edition of Nevermind.

In 2013, the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame announced Nirvana as a nominee for inclusion (along with KISS and Deep Purple - as much as I appreciate both bands I hope with all my heart that Nirvana will win. PLEASE VOTE HERE!), in the band's first year of eligibility; the museum's biography of the band states that Nirvana "start[ed] a rock revolution" and "remain an enduring influence and challenge", before declaring them "proof that the right band with the right noise can change the world."

ON THE AIR: HERBIE HANCOCK 'THE IMAGINE PROJECT'!

Herbert Jeffrey "Herbie" Hancock (born April 12, 1940) is an American pianist, keyboardist, bandleader and composer (Jazz pioneer, Oscar and Grammy winner, technical wizard, academic, philanthropist, Buddhist). As part of Miles Davis's Second Great Quintet, Hancock helped to redefine the role of a jazz rhythm section and was one of the primary architects of the "post-bop" sound. He was one of the first jazz musicians to embrace music synthesizers and funk music (characterized by syncopated drum beats). Hancock's music is often melodic and accessible; he has had many songs "cross over" and achieved success among pop audiences. His music embraces elements of funk and soul while adopting freer stylistic elements from jazz. In his jazz improvisation, he possesses a unique creative blend of jazz, blues, and modern classical music, with harmonic stylings much like the styles of Claude Debussy and Maurice Ravel.

His 2007 tribute album River: The Joni Letters won the 2008 Grammy Award for Album of the Year (facing competition from Kanye West, Foo Fighters, Amy Winehouse, and Vince Gill), only the second jazz album ever to win the award, after Getz/Gilberto in 1965.

On July 22, 2011 at a ceremony in Paris, Hancock was named UNESCO Goodwill Ambassador for the promotion of Intercultural Dialogue. Hancock recently joined the University of California, Los Angeles faculty as a professor in the UCLA music department where he will teach jazz music.

Herbie has won an Oscar and 14 Grammy so far, besides many other awards!

''The golbalization is here, but we have to think more about the kind of globalization that we want, and not one that's handed down to us.'' - Herbie Hancock

The Imagine Project is an album released on June 22, 2010. The album, which was recorded in many locations throughout the world and features collaborations from various artists, was complemented by a documentary about the recording process. Hancock's interpretations of these songs are cross-cultural. His version of "Imagine" was inspired by the Congolese group Konono N°1. The instruments used on "The Times, They Are A' Changin" combine the West African kora with the Celtic flute, fiddle and Uilleann pipes. It was released in CD, digital download and vinyl.

CALIFORNIAN COOL: MESSRS JUSTICE AND JEF JOSLIN!

Growing up in Johnson City, Tennessee, Messrs Jef and Justice Joslin always knew that there was something else out there for them. So, in late 2011, with one brother fixed on a career in music and the NFL beckoning for the other, they packed their belongings into a Toyota SUV and drove 35 hours cross-country to find their own version of the California dream.

"Growing up, that West Coast thing had always been an allure to me," explains Jef, the older of the two brothers at 27. "I'd always loved the Beach Boys. That rich, melodic sound - it seemed like the soundtrack to a lifestyle that I aspired to. I was just drawn to it." It was a job at a branch of Guitar Center in Atlanta, Georgia that gave the musician the opportunity he needed. "I just found a branch in LA near where I wanted to live, and hit up my manager for a transfer. Easy as that," he laughs. "Justice was trying out for NFL combines at the time, and I was like, "Dude, just come out with me.'"

Nearly two years later, Jef's music career is gathering pace, and Justice has shifted his focus from football and is making his way as an actor and model. Other than that, though, it seems little has changed. "When we first arrived, we'd sleep on the floor and eat black beans and rice. But we had surfboards," says the younger brother. "And we're still pretty easy to please now," adds Jef. "Having the beach out the back door is all you really need. You can always go to the water and watch the sunset, and it doesn't cost a thing."

MR PORTER caught up with the brothers on a typical day in LA. Follow the story, below!

ON THE AIR: ARCTIC MONKEYS 'AM' ALBUM 2013!

Arctic Monkeys are an English indie rock band formed in 2002 in High Green, a suburb of Sheffield. The band consists of Alex Turner (lead vocals, lead/rhythm guitar), Jamie Cook (rhythm/lead guitar), Nick O'Malley (bass guitar, backing vocals), and Matt Helders (drums, backing vocals). Former member Andy Nicholson (bass guitar, backing vocals) left the band in 2006 shortly after their debut album was released.
AM is the fifth studio album by the English indie rock band Arctic Monkeys. It was released on 9 September 2013 in Europe, 6 September 2013 in Australia, and 10 September 2013 in the United States.
In an interview with Zane Lowe on BBC Radio 1, Arctic Monkeys frontman Alex Turner said that the album title was inspired by the Velvet Underground's 1985 compilation album VU. "I actually stole it from the Velvet Underground, I'll just confess that now and get it out of the way. The 'VU' record, obviously," he said. "Did we cop out? Yeah! Summat about it feels like this record is exactly where we should be right now. So it felt right to just initial it."
The album was promoted by the singles: "R U Mine?", "Do I Wanna Know?", "Why'd You Only Call Me When You're High?" and "One for the Road". It features guest appearances by Josh Homme, Bill Ryder-Jones and Pete Thomas, and was produced by James Ford and co-produced by Ross Ortonat Sage & Sound Recording in Los Angeles and Rancho De La Luna in Joshua Tree, California.
The album received widespread critical acclaim and was nominated for the 2013 Mercury Prize for best album.
Commercially, AM has become Arctic Monkeys' most successful album to date, topping the charts in several countries, and reaching the top 10 positions in many more. In the United Kingdom, Arctic Monkeys broke a record with AM, becoming the first independent-label band to debut at number one in the UK with their first five albums.
Simon Harper of Clash magazine states, "Welding inspiration from hip-hop greats with rock's titans, 'AM' is built upon portentous beats that are dark and intimidating, yet wickedly thrilling."

HOW TO APPRECIATE WHISKEY!

''When it comes to whiskey sampling and appreciation, everyone does it in their own way. Above and below are some of my favourite pointers and recommendations I've always stood by. This process is best broken down based on the human senses. That aside, in my opinion, the best part of whiskey tastings is to tell the attendees about the history of the product and where it originated. I founded the Bulleit Distilling Company in 1987. ON THE AIR: JOHN FRUSCIANTE 'CURTAINS'!

Curtains is the ninth solo album by John Frusciante, released on February 1, 2005 on Record Collection. The album is primarily an acoustic album, in contrast to his previous work, recorded at his Hollywood Hills home. According to Frusciante, the album was recorded in his living room: "It was just me sitting on a pillow, on my living room floor, with my back leaning against the couch." The album features contributions from Autolux drummer Carla Azar, upright bassist Ken Wild, and The Mars Volta guitarist Omar Rodríguez-López, with Frusciante noting, "Carla from the band Autolux plays drums. I loved having a feminine energy. My friend Omar Rodriguez-Lopez of the Mars Volta played some guitar. He and I do these solos together where we're using the same amp at the same time." A video made in Frusciante's house was released for "The Past Recedes" (click here to watch). *The solo in the recording is played on his 12 string acoustic in the authentic version. However in the music video the filmmakers did not want him to change guitars in the middle.

The vinyl edition of the record saw a repressing from Record Collection on December 11, 2012. These reissued records are 180 gram and come with a download of choice between MP3 and WAV formats of the album.

All songs written by John Frusciante.
  1. "The Past Recedes" – 3:53
  2. "Lever Pulled" – 2:22
  3. "Anne" – 3:35
  4. "The Real" – 3:06
  5. "A Name" – 2:03
  6. "Control" – 4:29
  7. "Your Warning" – 3:33
  8. "Hope" – 1:56
  9. "Ascension" – 2:52
  10. "Time Tonight" – 3:12
  11. "Leap Your Bar" – 2:36

In my opinion, this is the greatest album ever. Have a good night and enjoy - headphones on!

DESERT BLUES, UN VOYAGE MUSICAL AU COEUR DU MALI!

In 2007 Michel Jaffrennou produced the documentary ‘Desert Blues – Un Voyage Musical au Coeur du Mali‘. Due to the current developments in Northern Mali this movie could not find more relevance today.

The movie takes us on a trip from Bamako to Tombouctou and presents us the culture and music of the Bambara, Songhai and Touareg people. It is a musical invitation to voyage deep into the Sahara and the Niger River, a voyage across sand and water. Symbiotically, in tune with the world of the musicians and their music, it is about the creation of sound-images, of song-images that tell the story of Mali, the Mali of today, land of enchantment. The unifying theme is the stories related by the poets and griot musicians in their songs: stories of love, of struggles and of heroes...in which the natural and supernatural co-exist as a part of everyday life. It is a musical tale, combining the real and the imaginary, weaving a spell of images and stories that enchants viewers and carry them off into the heart of Malian Africa, into its landscapes, its fantasies, as well as its everyday concerns. A film made up of music and songs, without any additional words, but with a multicultural perspective that should appeal to viewers all over the world. It features the great Malian artists Habib Koité, Afel Bocoum and the group Tartit and reminds us once more about the imaginably rich musical tradition that Mali has.

Below you can watch the documentary in French. Please click here to watch it with English subtitle.

BELIEVE EVERYTHING YOU HEAR: LV CONFIRMED NICOLAS GHESQUIÈRE!

Louis Vuitton announced on November 4, 2013 that Nicolas Ghesquiere has been named Creative Director. (Karim Sadli/Louis Vuitton Press Office, via Landov)

.
After months of speculation, Louis Vuitton has confirmed Nicholas Ghesquière will take over as the new artistic director of womenswear. [Read our 'Don't believe everything you hear..' article here!]

Since Ghesquière’s abrupt departure from Balenciaga last November, there has been much speculation over his next move. The 42-year-old takes over for Marc Jacobs, who stepped down from the role in October following the Spring/Summer 2014 show in Paris. Ghesquière will bring his long-term collaborator and stylist Marie Amélie Sauvé with him, and there are rumors that his former first assistant at Balenciaga, Natacha Ramsay, will also join his team.

Despite bitter endings, the designer’s 15-year term at Balenciaga was defined as a phenomenal success. As early as 2001, Suzy Menkes of The International Herald Tribune said, “Nicolas Ghesquière is the most intriguing and original designer of his generation. His collections are explorations of shape, volume, and embellishment that seem totally new—yet reflect in a glancing, abstract way the style of the iconic design house that shelters him.”

His work amassed such a cult following that it inspired the pertinent (now-defunct) Tumblr, Balenciaga Did It First, and his exacting mix of sportswear, tailoring, and shapes cut with couture-like precision defined the fashion landscape for many seasons. The fashion world largely has Ghesquière to thank for popularizing everything from bra tops and sculpted sleeves (although Cristobal Balenciaga did do that first), to graphic slogan sweaters—like those from the Balenciaga Fall 2012 collection that still remain the most photographed street style look in recent memory.

It’s also probable that Ghesquière, whose approach to womenswear recalls that of studied couturiers, will focus on instilling a more elite sensibility to the collections and the brand at large. It poses the question: will the spectacular Louis Vuitton presentations at Paris Fashion Week be a thing of the past? The media has come to anticipate fantastical sets, not to mention generous ticket allocations, at the Louis Vuitton shows. But, large-scale events and theatrics are not Ghesquière’s way: he prefers intimate, more traditional presentations.

Regardless, the new artistic director will assuredly take the brand (which celebrates its 160th anniversary next year) to an exciting new place—it’s sure to be an interesting ride come March.

ON THE AIR: FLAMENCO - 'EL SOL, LA SAL, EL SON'!

Flamenco is (first of all an art) a form of Spanish folk music and dance from the region of Andalusia in southern Spain. It includes cante (singing), toque (guitar playing), baile (dance) and palmas (handclaps). First mentioned in literature in 1774, the genre grew out of Andalusian and Romani music and dance styles.Flamenco is often associated with the Romani people of Spain (Gitanos) and a number of famous flamenco artists are of this ethnicity. While flamenco originally crystalized among gypsies in the 18th century, some authors believe that modern flamenco mostly emerged out of late nineteenth-century romanticism.

In recent years flamenco has become popular all over the world and is taught in many countries: in Japan there are more academies than there are in Spain. On November 16, 2010 UNESCO declared flamenco one of the Masterpieces of the Oral and Intangible Heritage of Humanity.

'''EL SOL, LA SAL, EL SON' is a flamenco program of Canal Sur. For this first program some great artists will be there: Miguel Poveda, Dorantes, El Lebrijano, Carmen Linares, Arcángel, Diego Carrasco, Pastora Galván, Pansequito, El Cigala and Rocío Molina among others. A sincere bet for the flamenco, one of the biggest cultures of the world. A commitment of support to the candidacy of the autonomous government of Andalusia in order to give the flamenco the recognition it deserves, a part of the World Cultural Heritage of the UNESCO. The flamenco is and should be a part of the Cultlural Heritage because it contributes to art, to culture and expresses the soul feelings of the humanity. It's a firm intention to bring flamenco to everybody, but without resigning about the quality, the purity and the depth.A program presented by Francisco Rivera, offering professional and expert contents. Universal Andalusian and Spanish artists will be present to talk about flamenco and giving support to its cancidacy. The Teatro Quintero is the prefect place for this kind of program.'' - flamencoexport.com

A footloose young man must undergo a dark and brutal trial by fire to save the love of his life in this flashy, violent adventure saga from Fredrik Bond, a celebrated director of television commercials. American Charlie Countryman's (Shia LaBeouf) heart breaks as his mother (Melissa Leo) expires in a hospital, but seconds after her death, she reappears to him in spirit form and implores him to visit Bucharest, Romania. On the plane, he strikes up a conversation with an enigmatic stranger, who dies in mid-flight; not long after, Charlie crosses paths with the man's daughter, beautiful cellist Gabi Banyai (Evan Rachel Wood). The two quickly grow smitten with one another and begin an affair, but there are complications afoot, including Gabi's marriage to a dissolute, psychopathic Romanian drug dealer named Nigel (Mads Mikkelsen) and one of his associates, mobster and strip-club owner Darko (Til Schweiger) -- each of whom despises Charlie and wants to see him dead. A recklessness overcomes Charlie, however, and he soon reveals that he's willing to do anything to claim Gabi, even if it means putting his very life on the line at the hands of these thugs.
