J. FRUSCIANTE - ANNE!

Curtains is the ninth solo album by John Frusciante, released on February 1, 2005 on Record Collection. The album is primarily an acoustic album, in contrast to his previous collaboration with Josh Klinghoffer, A Sphere in the Heart of Silence, which was mostly electronic. According to Frusciante, the album was recorded in his living room: "It was just me sitting on a pillow, on my living room floor, with my back leaning against the couch."

The album features contributions from Autolux drummer Carla Azar, upright bassist Ken Wild, and The Mars Volta guitarist Omar Rodríguez-López, with Frusciante noting, "Carla from the band Autolux plays drums. I loved having a feminine energy. My friend Omar Rodriguez-Lopez of the Mars Volta played some guitar. He and I do these solos together where we're using the same amp at the same time."

ART-DECO DRIVES!

The cars that put the 'roar' into the 'Roaring Twenties' and beyond!

This summer, the Frist Center for the Visual Arts in Nashville presents Sensuous Steel: Art Deco Automobiles. It is the first major exhibition of its kind, for which 18 unique cars have been painstakingly sourced by Virginia-based curator Mr Ken Gross for their history, style and sheer Art-Deco audacity

An auto writer for more than 40 years and former director of the Petersen Automotive Museum in LA, MR PORTER spoke to Mr Gross about this priceless "kinetic art", how these beautiful cars came to be, and what they mean in contemporary culture. "The classic cars of the Art-Deco age remain today as among the most visually exciting, iconic and refined designs of the 20th century," he says.

LINEN SUTIS!

At their best, linen suits allow a man to dress up while enjoying a level of comfort more commonly associated with loungewear. They also tap into the contemporary appetite for relaxed tailoring, and offer the perfect answer to the perennial summer question, "How do I look sharp when it's boiling hot?

It wasn't always like this. In the past men only wore linen suits in places that we'd now consider a pair of swim shorts and a T-shirt to be more appropriate - one thinks of Sir Dirk Bogarde's suit-wearing character in the film Death in Venice sweating by the lido. These days linen suits are more appropriate in town than they are on the beach, and thanks to the general relaxation of dress codes they can be worn almost anywhere.

However, pale colours are still less formal than dark ones, so cream suits are most appropriate for weekend wear, relatively casual weddings and creative offices. Save dark suits for events in the evening, formal weddings in hot climes and serious business environments. Finally, whatever the colour, and whatever the event, enjoy the breeze, and relax into the wrinkles that are an inevitable part of wearing a pure linen suit.

SPREZZATURA*!

'Know first who you are, and then adorn yourself accordingly.'

*Sprezzatura is an Italian word originating from Baldassare Castiglione's The Book of the Courtier, where it is defined by the author as "a certain nonchalance, so as to conceal all art and make whatever one does or says appear to be without effort and almost without any thought about it"

'BLACK GIRL', WHERE DID YOU SLEEP LAST NIGHT?

Huddie William Ledbetter (1888 – 1949) best known as Lead Belly, though many releases list him as "Leadbelly," he spelled it "Lead Belly."  was an iconic American folk and blues musician, and multi-instrumentalist, notable for his strong vocals, his virtuosity on the twelve-string guitar, and the songbook of folk standards he introduced.

Although Lead Belly most commonly played the twelve-string, he could also play the piano, mandolin, harmonica, violin, and accordion. In some of his recordings, such as in one of his versions of the folk ballad "John Hardy", he performs on the accordion instead of the guitar. In other recordings he just sings while clapping his hands or stomping his foot.

UPPER CLASS HYPOCRISY!

A petition attempting to prevent John Galliano from teaching at Parsons design college in New York has been launched. It was confirmed earlier this week that the designer would be taking a three-day master class at the celebrated school.

The petition - on change.org - currently has over 250 signatures, and was launched anonymously.

"It doesn't matter if it's for three months or three days, hiring someone who has made such horrific comments shows that the school values Galliano over their entire Jewish student body," reads the petition. "It shows they value him over their students' respect, peace of mind, and heritage. It is disgraceful to hire someone who has made such inhumane comments."

Students at Parsons The New School for Design were allegedly notified of the appointment via email. Galliano is believed to be teaching a session named Show Me Emotion - exploring the power of emotion in relation to fashion design.

Last month, the designer set a project for Central Saint Martins students, before paying a visit to the London college to comment on their final work. Rumours of a permanent teaching post circulated but were swiftly dismissed by a CSM spokesperson.

Galliano was dismissed from his position as creative director at Christian Dior in March 2011, after being filmed making anti-Semitic comments in a Paris café.

INSPIRATIONAL: MR PORTER x EQUINOXMR!

To kick off their partnership with the unparalleled health and wellness brand, Equinox, MR PORTER have collaborated on a short film which follows a day in the life of Mr Michael Chernow, a New York City-based owner of the beloved The Meatball Shop empire, and a quintessential MR PORTER and Equinox man. Watch the video below to find out more!

Whether it's work or a work-out, Mr Michael Chernow is not a man to do things by halves. "Every day, we have to make a decision," he tells MR PORTER, in this exclusive lifestyle short. "The decision to work hard, or to not work hard." It isn't hard to tell which path he takes.

"I really feel as if I started my career in 1993, when I was 13 years old," says the 32-year-old general manager and co-owner of The Meatball Shop, New York's wildly popular, four-strong chain of meatball restaurants. "Back then, I was delivering vegan food," he explains. "But even before then, I was busy. When I was 10, 11 years old I was walking every dog in the neighbourhood. I've always had an underlying drive to succeed."

That drive manifests itself in a passionate and determined attitude towards exercise, too - a part of life that, by Mr Chernow's own admission, he would be lost without. "I had an epiphany in my early twenties," he explains. "I realised that if I wanted to make anything of myself I would have to change and take action." It's a promise that he has promptly fulfilled.''

After 15 years spent working his way up the ranks in the restaurant business, Mr Chernow and his business partner Mr Daniel Holzman opened their first restaurant in February 2010, on Manhattan's Lower East Side. It was a moment he describes as the realisation of a dream. "We pulled the paper off the windows, and there was a line from the front of the restaurant that went all around the block. Daniel and I had no idea it was going to be that big. From that day, everything changed."

THE NAVY BLAZER!

Why start with the navy blazer? Put simply, it is one of the most versatile garments that a man can own. It occupies a happy medium on the scale of formality, and can be dressed up with a crisp white shirt and tie, or dressed down just as easily with denim. Navy blue, meanwhile, goes with everything, softening the vibrancy of pattern and print, providing a backdrop for bold colour, or adding contrast to muted shades. Finally, a well-cut blazer, such as the two-button Richard James one seen in MR PORTER's video, will streamline and elongate the torso, flattering any figure.

Colour, fit and formality: the three ingredients that make up the blue blazer's formula for timeless, versatile style. Watch the video below to see five very different ways to put it into practice.

I'v probably said it before, I'll say it again: I'd absolutely love to work for MRPORTER.COM!

MY TWO FAVOURITE 'JOHNS'!

The beginning of Frusciante working with Cash actually starts with Cash’s American albums with Rick Rubin. An already legendary producer, Rubin began to branch out of the rap & hard rock genres he was famous for in the mid-90s. What he got was Johnny Cash looking to go a new direction in his career and the two helped each other out immensely. Rubin got his smaller record label a lot of notice and Johnny Cash got another fresh breath for a career that was winding down. From 1994 on to his death, Cash would record with Rubin ultimately releasing six albums with him that churned out immense classics like “The Man Comes Around” and his legendary cover of “Hurt.” That’s saying a lot for Rubin too as Cash had a long history of despising his producers, most notably Jack Clement who tried to add a barbershop quartet to some of his songs. Knowing Rubin’s lengthy history with the Chili Peppers, it’s no surprise that Rubin enlisted John Frusciante’s help in collaborating with Cash to re-work some famous songs for his new albums.

The pair first got together to record “Personal Jesus” as Frusciante re-worked the Depeche Mode song into a well-done country rhythm. That song appeared on 2002′s American IV: The Man Comes Around along with the other two songs I mentioned up there. Interesting side note: that guitar riff was the first I ever learned on guitar. While that song is a great testament to Frusciante’s ability, I actually wanted to talk about their song together on Cash’s next work – his box-set Unearthed. Here, they unearthed (pun intended) arguably one of the best Neil Young songs out there and gave it a new feel. “Heart Of Gold” was a classic song by this point and a career-defining song for the Canadian rocker. Frusciante replaces all the harmonica solos with guitar ones and out-does Young again. Sure, it’s hard to compare the two instruments, but when it comes down to it, his are the better solos. Frusciante has always been able to capture the mood of a song well with his solos whether it is on his own or with the Peppers so naturally this song is no exception. With Frusciante making it a guitar must-listen & Cash turning it into an epic quest for that heart, it’s definitely a song you should be listening to right this second.

THELONIOUS MONSTER - BODY & SOUL?

Thelonious Monster is a post-punk rock band from Los Angeles, led by singer-songwriter Bob Forrest. Active from 1983 to 1994, and again since 2004, the band has released five original studio albums. Despite never achieving mainstream success, a number of largely popular acts cite them as influential

In 1988, guitarist John Frusciante auditioned for Thelonious Monster, he was in the band for only three hours, then was asked to join the Red Hot Chili Peppers because they were so impressed by Frusciante's musical ability.

After several years of sporadic activity and side projects by Forrest, Thelonious Monster reunited in 2004 at the Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival in Indio, California and at the Sunset Junction Street Fair in Los Angeles, and released their first new album in 12 years. California Clam Chowder would feature guitarist Josh Klinghoffer, who was also a member of Forrest's short-lived band, The Bicycle Thief. Klinghoffer would eventually go on to replace John Frusciante in the Red Hot Chili Peppers.

BRAND NEW: JOHN FRUSCIANTE - WAYNE!

On April 7, 2013, Frusciante released through his web site a tribute song named "Wayne" in memory of his friend Wayne Forman. I found out today, April 22, 2013, so it is still quite 'brand new'. Enjoy 10 minutes of perhaps one of the best guitar solos in the past few years (as one comment said 'this is like sugar to ears')

"This song was recorded for my friend Wayne Forman, the coolest, kindest friend anybody could ever have. When I used to play in arenas I would often mentally aim my playing at him. Wayne loved long guitar solos, and he was my favorite person in the audience to play for. As everyone who knew him is well aware, he was also the best chef ever. When I saw him two days ago, he was laying in front of a CD player, so when I came home I decided I'd make something for him. I recorded this solo for him to hear, but I finished it a day too late, so now it is a tribute to his memory. It is what he would have wanted me to play for him, and it is my offering to his family and friends all over the world, as well as anybody else. Wayne lives in our hearts forever, the greatest guy anybody could ever know. I'm so lucky to have been graced by his friendship. All the love in the world to him.

- John"

HOT DINNERS!

The broad rule of thumb with restaurants and food is the same as it is with all other areas of globalised life: you can get everything, everywhere, all the time. Produce is more internationalised than ever, and so are trends and cooking techniques - and as for the idea of keeping an idea secret, forget it. The bloggers and tweeters are across new developments as soon as they happen; no sooner has a chef put something on his menu for the first time than a customer has photographed it and uploaded it for the benefit of any chef in the world who wants to pinch, copy or imitate.

The important restaurant trend that has grown in response to that is to head in the opposite direction. It's about food that you precisely can't get anywhere else, or at any other moment: it's about unique experiences. Top chefs are now focused on locality and specificity. This cooking emphasises the sense of place. Ten years ago, the most influential restaurant in the world was generally agreed to be Mr Ferran Adrià's El Bulli on the Costa Brava, which was focused on technique and newness; its successor, Mr René Redzepi's Noma in Copenhagen, is all about locality, seasonality and sustainability. Check the slides, below, to find out about eight places that exemplify the trend.

YOU CAN'T ALWAYS GET WHAT YOU WANT!

"You Can't Always Get What You Want" is a song by the Rolling Stones on their 1969 album Let It Bleed. Written by Mick Jagger and Keith Richards, it was named as the 100th greatest song of all time by Rolling Stone magazine in its 2004 list of the "500 Greatest Songs of All Time".

The three verses (along with the varied theme in the fourth verse) address the major topics of the 1960s: love, politics, and drugs. Each verse captures the essence of the initial optimism and eventual disillusion, followed by the resigned pragmatism in the chorus

VLV has grown to be the largest event of it’s type in the world. It features bands and fans from all over the globe who come to experience Rockabilly & Original 50s Music, a huge Classic Car Show, Burlesque Competition, Vintage Fashion Show, Dance Lessons and Competition, Tiki Pool Parties held daily, Burlesque Bingo, over 120 Vendors, a Bowling event, The NEW Sailor Jerry Tattoo Lounge hosted by Stedfast Tattoo Parlor, and more.

*Rockabilly is one of the earliest styles of rock and roll music, dating to the early 1950s. It is a "blend of country & western and rhythm & blues" that... pointed the way to classic rock 'n' roll." It has also been defined as "popular music combining features of rock 'n' roll and bluegrass.". The influence and popularity of the style waned in the 1960s, but during the late 1970s and early 1980s-notably with the Stray Cats, rockabilly enjoyed a major revival of popularity. An interest in rockabilly endures even in the 21st century, often within a rockabilly subculture.

Events are held in 6 different music venues within The Orleans Hotel and Casino, with additional areas on site for vendors and more. VLV has grown from the first year’s 1,200 people in attendance, to an attendance of 20,000. The VLV event has sold out in advance for the last few years, so attendees are encouraged to purchase tickets early. Price before March 8, 2013 were $115.

This year’s VLV will feature 65 bands, including Little Richard, Dick Dale, The Rockcats, The Cleftones, a Janis Martin Tribute with Marti Brom & Rosie Flores and 20+ DJs performing nightly between the hours of 1pm and 7am. The 65 performers include Original 50s Stars of Rockabilly, legends of Rock ‘n Roll and Doo Wop, and current rockabilly bands from all over the world. THE CLASSICS: PLAID SHIRTS!

Plaid, or check, has been part of the male wardrobe for centuries: examples of Scottish tartan date back to the 1500s, while some researchers maintain that checked textiles existed in Europe as early as 400BC. We're no historians, but we believe the reason plaid has endured in menswear for so long - and shows no sign of going anywhere - has something to do with the fact that it looks so good. From two-colour checks to multi-tonal plaids, there's something visually pleasing about the criss-crossing of straight lines, especially in contrast to the more fluid nature of clothing - in particular, shirts.

The plaid shirt became prominent in the early 20th century, when it was associated with the American outdoors: cowboys, hunters and lumberjacks all favoured check flannel shirts, with the latter group immortalised by the cult folklore figure Paul Bunyan. Made popular in 1914 by the advertiser Mr William Laughead to promote the Red River Lumber Company in Westwood, California, a giant statue of Paul Bunyan, wearing his distinctive red plaid shirt, in Bemidji, Minnesota, is now part of the US National Register of Historic Places.

After WWII, the plaid shirt started to make its transition into popular culture and into the casual wardrobe of city dwellers, who were no doubt keen to capitalise on its rugged and adventurous connotations. Movie stars and matinée idols including Messrs Guy Madison, James Dean and Rock Hudson were pictured wearing them, only furthering their popularity, and in 1963 The Beach Boys were photographed wearing identical plaid shirts on the cover of their album Surfer Girl, embedding the plaid shirt in laid-back surf culture. Towards the end of the 20th century plaid shirts became associated with the grunge movement, with bands such as Pearl Jam and Nirvana wearing them, and they still carry rock star connotations to this day.

Today, the plaid shirt is a wardrobe staple which can be worn in any number of ways, from casually with jeans and a leather jacket, to more formally with a blazer and knitted tie. Part of the plaid shirt's enduring appeal can be explained by the fact that it enables colour and pattern to be introduced to the male wardrobe, within the constraints of right angles and straight lines: plaid can be visually rich and even a bit flamboyant, without compromising on masculinity or breaking all the rules. After all, whenever we slip on a plaid shirt, part of us holds on to the belief that we could be about to fell a tree or shoot something for dinner.

SPRING'S REQUEST: JOHANN PACHELBEL!

Johann Pachelbel (baptised September 1, 1653 – buried March 9, 1706) was a German Baroque composer, organist and teacher, who brought the south German organ tradition to its peak. He composed a large body of sacred and secular music, and his contributions to the development of the chorale prelude and fugue have earned him a place among the most important composers of the middle Baroque era.

Pachelbel's music enjoyed enormous popularity during his lifetime; he had many pupils and his music became a model for the composers of south and central Germany. Today, Pachelbel is best known for the Canon in D, as well as the Chaconne in F minor, the Toccata in E minor for organ, and the Hexachordum Apollinis, a set of keyboard variations.

Pachelbel's Canon in D major, a piece of chamber music scored for three violins and basso continuo and originally paired with a gigue in the same key, experienced a tremendous surge in popularity during the 1970s. This is believed to be due to a recording by Jean-François Paillard in 1970, which made it a universally recognized cultural item. Its visibility was greatly increased by its choice as the theme song for the popular film Ordinary People. Now one of the most recognized and famous baroque compositions, it has in recent years become extremely popular for use in weddings, rivalling that of Wagner's Bridal Chorus.

BILL EVANS & JIM HALL UNDERCURRENT (1962)!

And last but definitely not least: artist/album of the day!

William John Evans, known as Bill Evans (16 August 1929 – 15 September 1980), was an American jazz pianist and composer who mostly worked in a trio setting. He is widely considered to be one of the greatest jazz pianists of all time, and is considered by some to have been the most influential post-World War II jazz pianist. Unlike many other jazz musicians of his time, Evans never embraced new movements like jazz fusion or free jazz.

After Scott LaFaro's (bassist in Bill Evans trio) death, at age 25, Evans did not record or perform in public again for several months. In October 1961, persuaded by his producer Orrin Keepnews, Evans would reappear on the musical scene with an album with Mark Murphy. With new bassist Chuck Israels, they recorded in December Nirvana, with flautist Herbie Mann, soon followed by Undercurrent (below), with guitarist Jim Hall.

Evans was honored with 31 Grammy nominations and seven awards, and was inducted in the Down Beat Jazz Hall of Fame! Enjoy!
